Eagle Scream                       April 20, 2000

 Eagle Cam Watchers,

Yesterday was a slow day around the eagle nest. I saw an adult eagle on a tall pine around 150 yards from the nest, but did not see an eagle in the tree with the nest. One has been standing on the edge of the nest in the past two weeks. Hopefully one of the parents is sitting on the egg or eggs and the other is helping with other chores.

A week ago I woke up to the cry of eagle screams. When I looked to see what was happening, I saw an adult standing on the edge of the nest. The eagle was ripping up some meat, probably a fish. It looked as though breakfast was being served. When I looked back a while later, two crows were cawing in the same tree and looking at the nest. They kept getting closer, but stayed very alert. Finally one and then the other got to the edge of the nest, reached in with the beak, took something and flew to a spruce tree on the other side of the island.

Yesterday after telling this story to my friend Pierre, he thought there was a female in the nest and the male brought her a fish. Then the female started to scream, "All you ever bring me lately is fish. I am sick of fish! First you get me pg, and now this fish, fish stuff." After the female ate some of the fish, she fell asleep to the cawing of the crows. When she was asleep or not watching, the crows got bold and took some of the fish.

Pierre claims to understand eagle screaming so this might be what happened. He did not actually hear the screams himself. I tried to repeat with my voice what I heard and I might have missed a few words. Who knows.
